Customizing My Website

If you're using a built-in website theme, you can customize your website by going to the My Site menu and clicking on the Customize My Site link. If you would prefer to build a custom site, skip down to the Creating a Custom Website section.

From the Customize My Site page, you can change the following:

  • Enter in your YL Member Number so that you receive credit for any new members who sign up using the links on your website.
  • The Website Header field lets you customize the text that appears at the top left of your website theme.
  • If you would like the Opportunity page to have a custom video, you may paste in a link to a custom YouTube or Vimeo video.
  • You may also change the website theme and landing page, as well as add in your social media links, and add in third-party tools like website analytics.
  • For the built-in website themes, you can also add photos at the top of the page. Click on Customize My Site in the menu, then click on the Customize button next to the Website Theme link.
  • To change the social media sharing image, choose an image in the Custom Share Image field. This field will show on services like Facebook when you share a link to your site.
  • To change the site favicon (the icon that appears in the browser tab), choose an image in the Custom Favion field.
  • If you have a custom logo you'd like to add to the upper left corner instead of displaying the text in the Website Header field, choose an image in the Site Logo field. The image should be about 200 pixels tall by 200 to 600 pixels wide and be a PNG with a transparent background.

Creating a Custom Website

The built-in themes have limited customization options, but you can build your own pages and even set those as your home page.

The steps to create a custom site are as follows:

  1. Create one or more pages to use for your site
  2. Edit the menu of your site to add those pages to your site
  3. Set one of the pages as your home page, which will make that page the home page of your site.

To build your own web pages, there are some resources to help. First, there are these help articles:

We also did a training on the web page builder and show some customer sites built with GetOiling that are both available on the Custom Page Builder article.  That video walks through how to build web pages, set up a menu, and change your site home page.

Additional Settings

If you have the Premium or higher GetOiling plan or the Basic plan with the fonts, colors, and analytics add-on package, you can make the following website customizations:

  • Choosing a custom sharing image. This image is used on sites like Facebook when sharing pages on your website.
  • Making additional fonts available on your website, from the collection of Google fonts.
  • Choosing a page title for built-in website themes. The page title appears on the browser tab, in the browser history, and wherever you share the pages. Since the website's custom page editor allows you to specify your own page title there, this setting does not apply to custom pages.
  • Choosing a Custom Sharing Description. This longer description appears when sharing your website on social media sites, as well as when your site appears on some search engines.
  • Adding a custom section to your website. Adding text or images to this field allows you to create a custom section within a built-in themed website.
  • Adding custom fonts to your website. For example, if you've purchased a specific font or would like to use a free font from a service like Google Fonts, you can do that here. Click here for instructions on how to set up a custom font.
  • Choosing a custom site page footer that appears on the bottom of every page of your website. To use a custom footer, first, create a page using the custom page builder, then come back to the Customize My Site page and choose the page from the list and save.
  • Creating a custom email footer. This appears at the bottom of every email but is not your email signature.  This email footer is required to be CAN-SPAM compliant if you are based in the US, which means you must include a valid physical postal address in this footer or risk fines. An example custom email footer might be, "Sent with love from Jane Smith, 123 Main St, Somewhere USA 12345".

Troubleshooting

Facebook Sharing

If your website does not update its Facebook sharing image and description after updating these settings, visit the Facebook Sharing Debugger tool by clicking here, put in the link to the page you want to check, and then click the Debug button. Once the social sharing preview appears, there is a Scrape Again button that can be clicked in order to tell Facebook to update the page. Sometimes, the button has to be clicked a few times a few seconds apart.

Favicons

When using some Mac browsers like Safari, favicons are not displayed by default. To enable favicons in Safari on a Mac, open the Safari menu, click on Preferences, then click the Tabs tab at the top. Then click the "Show website icons in tabs" checkbox.
